That being said, it seems that the Japanese company Murakami Corporation wants to go even further, making these toilets more modern and high tech than ever. One of the concerns in the toilet, let alone in today’s sanitary environment, is that the buttons are operated by everyone who uses the toilet in question. This is far from hygienic on the one hand, and can even be dangerous on the other hand due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

How then to limit contact? Cleaning the buttons after each pass is not an option, or at least not realistic, so Murakami has partnered with Parity Innovations to design a holographic control panel, offering buttons that appear to float. By using infrared sensors to detect finger movement, the system is able to determine which buttons the user is attempting to press and trigger the feature accordingly.

Obviously, this technology cannot be limited to toilets alone. One can imagine quite a number of situations in which one could use such holographic controls, such as cash machines, elevators, etc. This device may appear to be more of a concept than a finished product, but Murakami hopes to start mass production of these panels in 2022. No doubt they would become democratized very quickly thereafter.
